Platy breeding is the perfect entry into the fascinating world of aquarium fish breeding. Most livebearers are prolific breeders and will go about reproducing themselves with very little intervention from the owner, providing they are healthy and have the right tank conditions.
Two of the most popular species with hobbyists are platys and swordtails: both are peaceful, colorful and about the same size, and so have similar requirements.. Because they are from the same Genus, these fish will usually breed together freely and happily in a community tank. These fish are not too particular about water conditions. Most will thrive with slightly alkaline, moderately hard water and temperatures between 72-80°F.
One of the best characteristics of these fish is that the fry are reasonable in size and able to feed within minutes of being born. However, they are, of course, immediately at risk of being eaten by their parents and any of the other tank inhabitants. The easiest way to prevent this from happening is make sure that there are good hiding places and plenty of cover in the aquarium, with adequate plants and rocks. This will save a few but unfortunately will not be enough to prevent many from being eaten.
A better solution is to use a breeding trap which can be bought from the aquatic pet store. These are special containers in which the pregnant female is placed shortly before giving birth. The fry are able to escape from the mother by swimming through the small holes in the container.
There are quite a number of different types of breeding trap available. Some are designed for use in a community tank and others for separate breeding tanks. A simple breeding net will provide a separate partition for the mother and after she has given birth she can be removed, while the fry are separated from the tank by the breeding net.
Another design of trap will keep the mother separated from the fry with a grating which the fry are able to swim through. A combination type of trap will allow the babies, after birth, to drop through an opening in the bottom of the trap and they then have their own nursery quarters after the mother is removed.
Females and fry should not be kept in breeding traps for any longer than necessary, they are meant to give temporary protection and are a short term device to deal with the immediate threat to the life a the fry. Females will find the breeding trap quite a stressful experience and it is a better option to provide a separate breeding tank for her to give birth and then place her back in the main tank leaving the fry to the peace and safety of their own tank.
The fry will grow better and faster if they are given a combination of live and dried food Suitable food for the fry is newly baby brine shrimp, which can be bought in frozen form. Hard boiled egg yolk can be strained and the dried flake food can be ground up so that it is small enough for them to eat. Feed as often as three times daily is best in the early stages.
