Breeding Aquarium Fish

It may come as a surprise to many but breeding fish in a home aquarium can be quite exciting and I remember feeling quite ‘maternal’ when my first batch of mollies appeared on the scene. This hobby can really take hold of you and you can become quite obsessed before you know it. However, you do need to be prepared for the inevitable – ‘Canabalism’ is alive and well in the aquarium! and many unfortunate youngsters become tasty treats for the adult tank inhabitants. Many new aquarium fish breeders are faced with this distressful situation when the baby fry are gobbled unmercifully. Luckily this situation can be easily avoided and following a few very easy tips can get you started with successful aquarium breeding.

How Fish Breed
Fish are either egg layers or live bearers. For beginners the live bearers are easier and some species such as guppies and mollies will breed copiously approximately every six weeks if they are well-fed and happy in their environment. However, most fish species are egg layers and each species varies considerably in the way they lay their eggs and breed.
